A very good singers' night last night at the Milkmaid – a feast of excellent music, great to see so many young (and talented) performers there - and, of course, all MC'd in fine style - thank you Terry. More people should come along and enjoy these fine nights.

I thought I was mainly going out to play myself - but actually I really enjoyed listening. What a night of excellent and varied music! Richard Byers

Just a few lines to say how much we enjoyed the Demon Barber Roadshow at the Apex on Friday night - we had seen them perform previously in Trafalgar Square and at the Cambridge Folk Festival, and had expected more or less the same content. However, we were very much surprised, pleased and impressed by this presentation and 'fusion' of street and traditional dance - very well done and congratulations to Milkmaid for a successful evening. We had a great night last night and it was good to meet so many friends and friendly faces. Congratulations to Steve as well, because the PA was up there with the best. See you in November, if not before Richard Brazear [Four Blokes Ed.]

Thank you for the Carthy and co gig at the Apex. Chris Wood was a revelation - a candidate for a solo gig? And what about Julie Fowlis or Karine Polwart - or more Robin Williamson? Keep up the good work. Richard Byers

Just a note to say what a great night it was last week. The audience were dead warm and it was a great turn out, my worries about ticket sales proved to be unfounded. Thanks and well done mate .Cheers  Vin [Garbutt Ed.]

It was very kind of you to fit us in at no notice. If we had realised how popular the Milkmaid club is we would have contacted you first. Having seen the club I can see why it is so popular! We would love to come back and do a proper spot. If you could let me know what dates you have available I can check which ones don't clash with our own club. We meet only once a fortnight so hopefully would be able to find a mutually agreeable date. Thank you again for making us so welcome. Suzanne Tibbenham

We enjoyed the gig at the Milkmaid very much. You have a great sound-man. I do hope your audiences pick up a bit,
but from what we hear from other parts of the country it is the same everywhere. Doesn't look good for folk.

Best wishes, Mary [Humpreys Ed.]

[Re Disability Folk Club Ed.]

Just a quick note of thanks from Jo and I for inviting me to be a part of last weeks gigs in Bury at the Adult Learning Centre and Headway. It was really fun - and everyone so welcoming. We find ourselves still speaking of some of the people we met, and telling each other about conversations we had with the people at the gigs. I forgot to tell you what guitarist Mark said to me on Thursday evening. At one point in between songs he suggested we do something by the Shadows. I said to him how much I love the Shadows but how I don't really have any of their songs under my fingertips at the moment. His response was: So I guess some Cliff Richard is out of the question then? It still makes me laugh when I think about it! Anyway, we loved the freedom and spontaneity of it all, and, on Thursday night, the total involvement the audience had with the music. Both events were fabulous and had their own character and vibe - and also reflect your love of, and commitment to, not only the people in your community but to live music. We wish you all the best with your ideas for the future at the Adult Learning Centre. Do keep us in the loop. Also, if you had any photos from the evening we would appreciate a copy if that's okay.... I had my camera but forgot to ask you or Jo or Steve to take any pictures. Brooks Williams

Thanks very much for having us last night - our first true support slot at the Milkmaid - we really enjoyed it.
Steve must be one of the best sound men around - I was looking forward to singing through his system and sure enough, despite being unwell, he did a wonderful job.
It was also a treat to hear the Malingerers - what a great band! Good to lead the dancing at the back!
Liz, the Lark

Just to say thank you for making me feel so welcome on my first visit to The Milkmaid last Friday (30th July). A very well organised and friendly club, I thouroughly enjoyed performing. Super club and super people.

Hope to see you all again in the near future. Best wishes - Tony Dinsdale

What a wonderful  evening with Sarah Grey & Keiron Means, the Malingerers were a superb support, please can you get them back sometime as a main act. Unfortunately I had to leave before the end as it went on far too late for me. Is it possible to have a shorter half time break and finish earlier as the concerts seem to be finishing later and later. Thanks Michael.

A belated Thank You from Gwendal and me for a wonderful night on Jan 15th and such a great reception! Please also pass on huge thanks to Steve for doing whatever he does so brilliantly, so that this complete novice with a microphone didn't have anything to worry about! .... Thanks again - great place, great people. Catherine Legg

Thank you for your warm welcome at the Milkmaid last week As you know it was my first visit to the club and I was very  impressed at the whole set-up, from the PA/Lighting, organisation of singers, venue, ambience...I could go on.  I checked out your website too, very good !   I mentioned to Brian how impressed |I was with the quality of the local talent you have, there were a lot of good performers on the night and everyone I met was friendly and welcoming.... Now that I've found the club I hope I'll be seeing you more regularly anyway. Thanks again, I had a lovely night. Chris King

Dear Milkmaid Folk Club, At last you've seen sense in dropping the floor spots. I will come more often now as will 2 others I know. Great news. Mike Rennie

i've been meaning to tell you how friendly and relaxed i thought your club was (unlike some others) and how great it is that i still maintains good quality acts. i thought steve, your sound man, did a fantastic job and was very attentive to our various needs. Claudine

I had a great time last night. Alex was fantastic, hopefully you get him to play again. I enjoyed Bella but it was the Irish guy from Last Night's Fun who really blew me away. Please, please book him to play soon. I went straight home and ordered 2 of Last Night's cd's and Alex said that he said the Irish guy (I'm useless with remembering names) [Denny Bartley Ed.] had made his night too. I'll definately be back again when my shifts allow. I'd love to play at your club it has a really nice atmosphere. Could you let me know when your open mic nights are please? Alan

Thanks for a great evening yesterday and for being so welcoming to my kids, especially Natasha! We thought all the acts were great, but Bella was absolutely fantastic. Please get her back soon! Sarah

Many thanks, Terry, for giving Chris and I the opportunity to play at Coldhams Common.  We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - the sound was excellent and the audience very receptive - unsurprisingly!  It was areal treat to play at the end of what had been an inspiring and fantastic day.  Thank you!

One other thought about encouraging the public in - we have a village magazine that comes out once every couple of months - it would be a good place to put your listings, along with any other village magazines.  I would happily write an article to highlight it in our magazine, and perhaps club members could do the same in their locality

I only found out about the Milkmaid when I met Linda and David while singing.  I am sure there are others out there who would love to come if they knew it was there. Liz Miller

Thank you so much for a great night! I really enjoyed it and so appreciated how much the audience engaged with all of us performing. I thought the whole setup was beautifully run and I would love to come back and play again. I also thought the sound was great.... Pema Clark

What an absolute delight to have such talented young people as the Lizzie Doe band appearing as support for Flossie. Please can we have some more good young acts and have Lizzie back as a main act. Thank you. Ann

Posted Monday 26th Jan  09

I'm sorry to say that I don't really think the floor singers before the support act is working very well.

It makes the evening too long and to be truthful they  spoil the enjoyment of the evening.

Surely you could arrange another time for floor singers instead of spoiling the fantastic nights you give us. Mike

Posted Monday 26th Jan 09

Hi, is it really necessary to have two floor spots on before the evening starts.

Having the support act and main guest is enough for an evening. When you put on two (all respect to them ) poor local performers it takes away the quality of the concert.

Why don't you have more singers nights so these people can play then, instead of force feeding them to an audience there for quality. Anon

Catherine Craig & Brian Willoughby were fantastic and I really enjoyed Brians guitar playing, I could have listened to Brian on his own all night but Catherine added that extra bit of sparkle. I thought that Gary Breeze was very brave to play guitar on the same bill as Brian, but he did a wonderful job. Not so sure that the floor spots beforehand is such a good idea, maybe this should be moved to the open mic sessions so that we can hear more of the main artists. Eric

Pete Castle & Jon Row - what a wonderful intimate evening. The re-arranged stage and seating worked very well for the evening, but only because of the very poor attendance. There would have been a problem if more people had turned up - where is everybody? I can see the club closing if  only a few people bother to attend. Anon
