PRESS RELEASE
19th July 2007

The Milkmaid is, at present, a successful folk club offering the opportunity to see top British and international folk artists in a comfortable local venue: The Constitutional Club in Guildhall Street. It is run by Terry Walden who has been in the folk music industry longer than he cares to remember. Terry’s vision, though, is for a community-based centre in Bury to serve and encourage the local people’s interest in all things concerning the folk tradition.

The planned Folk Arts Centre will be located in a more spacious venue and, whilst maintaining the local club scene, will also be able to host international guests on a larger scale. It will provide folk music and dance tuition to people in the East Anglia area and will also incorporate workshops run by professional folk musicians including students from local schools and music departments.

The principal aim is to make our rich heritage of British folklore, folk music and dance available to everyone here.
Along side this, the Arts Centre will also offer a supportive role promoting and advising local folk artists and dancers who are starting out in the folk music and dance industry. It will be a much needed venue for poetry reading, story telling, instruction workshops, instrument tuition, and exhibitions, while also helping to raise awareness of British folklore, local customs and a vast array of country recipes and remedies; there will be an opportunity to meet the very individuals who are part of the local legends!

As well as supporting and encouraging ethnic minorities now living in our region to share their folk customs, music and dance with all of our community in Suffolk, therefore bringing together different cultures through the medium of Folk Art.

Perhaps most importantly it will provide a much welcome venue for people from all backgrounds and abilities to meet, socialise and learn about their heritage, thus giving a social and artistic focus to the area. We are currently seeking funding and campaigning locally for sponsorship as well as voluntary support – quality premises, professional trainers and high calibre artists don’t come cheap!

Advice and contacts welcome;
